Below you will find a list of our most frequently asked questions. Click a tab to expand it and learn more.
We've written a fairly comprehensive list of things that you should bring to our events. You can find it in the 'What to Bring' tab.
You should try to avoid hitting people in the head. If you hit people in the head too often, they may start hitting you in the head in a deliberate and increasingly aggressive manner until you stop hitting them in the head.
This applies to groin shots too.
If you believe someone is fighting unsafely, you should inform a ref and we will deal with it appropriately. A quick "pull your blows, please" or "please watch out for head shots" is also okay for you to say. Don't retaliate, however, as this will only escalate the situation and then you'll both be in the wrong.
General advice:
- Pull your blows - don't hit at full force.
- Slow down - 3/4 speed fighting is good, both for safety and for heroic-looking battles.
- One hit per weapon per second - "drumrolling" is not good. It's a sword, act like it.
- Weapons are heavy, and getting hit hurts - don't forget to roleplay this during fights. It makes it more fun for all of us.
- Take your hits - if it hit you, it hit you. No-one likes a cheater, and you're only cheating yourself.
- Watch your footing - if the area you're fighting in is uneven or unsafe (due to obstacles, drops, corpses etc), steer the fight to somewhere more appropriate.
- Die safely - if you go down, don't throw yourself under the feet of other fighters or into a nettle patch. You can stagger a few steps out of the way - just don't take the piss with this and stagger all the way over to the nearest healer!
- Remember the SAFETY call - if you hear someone shout "SAFETY", this means that someone has been actually injured in real life. Immediately stop what you are doing and get down on one knee - this helps the first aiders to quickly see what's happened and get to the injured person. Once the situation is resolved, a ref will call "Time In" to indicate that play can resume.
- Avoid head and groin shots - accidents happen, but avoid these areas if at all possible
- Only grapple with people who have given advanced consent, and be extra careful when miming a fist fight to not actually punch or headbutt the other participant. It's best to vocalise what you're doing to avoid accidents (e.g call "headbutt").
- NO thrusting - save it for the bedroom. The exception to this is with special stab-safe weapons, but you should always assume that your weapon is not safe for thrusting with unless a ref specifically confirms otherwise.
We'll always give a 'Safe Fighting' brief to new players before every event, and a general 'Safety' brief to all players and crew.
Talk to a ref. Dom and Bean are always happy to help, and Ky the Player ref is always with the players if the Head Refs are elsewhere.
Talk to a ref, don't confront them yourself. It may be that they have a unique item/skill that allows them to do things that seem a little cheaty, or they could just be cheating. Mention it to Dom or Bean and we'll have a chat to them and find out what's going on.
Well for starters, why would you want to? Sexism, racism and homophobia, among other prejudices, are things that real people have to deal with daily in the real world. We go to LARP for an escape, not to have to deal with our real-world issues over again.
As such, our stance on this is quite clear. There are no gender roles in the in-game world, nor are there prejudices against sexual orientation This is meant to be a fun game, and if your idea of fun involves belittling people for factors beyond their control in the real world, then we're sorry to say that 'your character' isn't the arsehole here - it's you.
As for racism - hate on the IC races as much as you like. Got a thing against elves? Go for it! Think humans are scum? Great! But let's leave OOC races out of it.
As a general rule of thumb, you can play as mean and unlikeable a character as you like - but be nasty to the characters, not the players. Don't be cruel about the OOC traits of others as an IC roleplay device, because it's a dick move and we will call you out on it.
Create an account here, making sure to fill in the medical information and emergency contacts. Once you've logged in, you can click on the 'My Events' button on the members dashboard to view all the upcoming events and book onto them. You can also use this area to edit your booking.
In the Members Area, click on the 'My Characters' button on the members dashboard, and at the top of the page there'll be an option to 'Create New Character'. You can find more information on Character Creation here.
No, that's creepy. We don't allow spectators as it detracts from immersion and can make people uncomfortable. If you'd like to see what LARP is like, we'd suggest crewing an event - it's free, and you get a good idea of how the game works without it being too intense.
In Character: yes, you may steal item cards, money, weapons, physreps or any other items from other characters. Please inform a ref that you have done this, so that we can anonymously let the victim know that their item has been taken IC, in the case of items that they own OOC. This is to make sure they have no OOC concerns about the location of their possessions.
You may not steal OOC possessions, or take people's physreps without informing a ref. This will be treated as theft, and we will take it very seriously.
No. While we make every effort to keep our players and crew as safe as possible, LARP is still an activity that carries an element of risk. Even though you may not be directly involved in any of the combat, there is still the chance that you could be bumped or knocked over accidentally, which could cause harm to an unborn child. As such, we cannot allow pregnant people to take part in our games.
You can click here for more detail about event pricing and structure.
We have a few restrictions on weapons for the safety of all participants. A ref's decision is final on all rulings.
All weapons:
- No split latex or visible cores.
- At least 2" clearance from tip of weapon to tip of core.
- If you are unwilling to take a hit from your own weapon during weapon checks, you will not be allowed to use it at the event.
Thrown weapons:
- Must be coreless, or be deemed "safe" in a weapons check by a ref.
Bows/Crossbows:
- 30lb draw limit.
- You must be able to demonstrate basic competency before being allowed to use a bow/crossbow at an event.
One-handed weapons:
- Maximum length of 42".
Stab-Safe Weapons:
- We do allow stab-safe weapons in SC. They will be marked with a red elastic band during weapons checking.
- You should still never thrust with any weapon unless it is YOUR weapon and a ref has confirmed that you may thrust with it during a weapons check, OR
- You are crewing and a ref has confirmed that that particular weapon is stab safe with a red elastic band. You should check this BEFORE you take the weapon out into an encounter.
Grappling is permitted in Second Chance, but only if all participants consent.
At the start of each event we will ask for a show of hands for who is explicitly okay with grappling. You should pay attention during this, and only grapple these people. If you can't remember if someone is okay with grappling, ask them BEFORE you initiate a grapple.
Always ensure you're grappling safely and be careful not to headbutt or punch anyone accidentally!
When a location drops below 0 hit points, it is considered to have taken a 'mortal wound' and is therefore particularly vulnerable to further damage. If you are struck again on this location, it is destroyed. If the location is your head or torso, this means you are dead.
If you take a mortal wound to any location, you begin to bleed out, and should start counting. If no one comes to bandage you or hold your wounds closed before 2 minutes has passed, you have bled out and are dead.Any character can staunch bleeding, but only someone with the Medicine skill can fix them properly.
You can staunch your own mortal wounds, provided that they are not on your head or torso, at least one of your arms is working (above 0 hit points), and you are not unconscious. You become unconscious if your head or torso reaches 0 hit points.
You have two options here. You can either switch to playing a new character - players often bring costume for a backup character, and in some cases we may be able to lend you some crew kit. Any xp your dead character would have earned for the weekend will be given to your new character after the event.
The alternative is to join the monster crew for the remainder of the event, and help run the game. Any xp your character would have earned for the weekend will be added to a new starting character for you after the event, and you will earn 1 crew credit so long as you joined the monster crew on Saturday evening or earlier.
You won't get a refund if your character dies during the event, as there is ample opportunity for you to resume play with a different character.
Downtimes are your character's actions in the world in between events.
After each weekend event (of which there will be 3-4 a year), the character that you have played for that weekend will receive one MAJOR downtime action and two MINOR downtime actions. After a single day adventure/linear the character you have played will receive one MINOR downtime to use.
On top of this, after a weekend event, any resource points controlled by any of your active characters will produce an appropriate amount of resources dependant on level and circumstances.
We have an advisory lower age limit of 14 at our weekend events due to mature themes and language (there is no upper age limit). Under-14s may attend at a ref's discretion with parental permission, but must be supervised at all times by a designated guardian over 18 years of age. If the guardian fails to supervise the minor properly, we may have to ask both of you to leave the event.
Please keep in mind that we will not 'tone down' plot, content, special effects or language to suit a younger audience.
We recommend that you read through and at least gain a basic understanding of the system rules before coming to an event, as this will vastly improve your experience. We do have a quick reference guide to the very core rules, spells and calls that you may find helpful to print and bring with you if you need to refresh your memory during a game. If you are unsure of a rule, you can always ask a ref and we will be happy to clarify for you.
For an item to count as armour, it must be clearly recognisable as armour rather than clothing. If you are unsure if something is suitable as armour, you can send a picture to a ref or have us check it for you at the event before time in.
While we expect the party to mostly work together against the common enemies and plot (Player vs Environment), PvP (Player vs Player) can happen in our games.
That's not to say that there aren't IC consequences for such - murder is very much a crime - but we do not OOC ban PvP from happening.
Everything on the World pages is considered to be common knowledge, with the possible exception of the pages on the Eballa race as they are still fairly newly contacted. The main source of most of the information about the worlds of Old and New Kalassa is an NPC called Blancha Teegs, a famous historian and author who writes books about such matters.
Our events are 24 hour time in, which means that you are in-character from the start of the event and remain so right up until "Time Out" at the end of the event. We understand that some people may find this quite intensive, so if you feel as though you need to step out of the game for a while please find a ref and we'll be happy to help.
